S&P 500 Index investment & finance definition

This Standard & Poor’s Index is a capitalization-weighted index of 500 stocks. It is a popular index and is used to measure the performance of the large cap U.S. stock market. The 500 stocks of this index are selected to be a representative sample of leading companies. Money managers often index their portfolios to match or beat the S&P 500. GSPC is the ticker symbol.
