A stock index established by the New York Stock
Exchange (NYSE) in 1966 that was intended to be a comprehensive measure of
market trends. This index includes all the common stocks listed on the NYSE and
four subgroup indices: Finance, Industrial, Transportation, and Utility. The
index measures changes in the market value of NYSE common stocks. It is
adjusted to eliminate the effects of capitalization changes, new listings, and
delistings. The trading symbol is NYA.X.
