The number of times that a dividend can be divided into after-tax profit for the period. Dividend cover indicates the level of profits that will be available to pay dividends. Typically dividend cover is a British term. To calculate the dividend cover, divide the per share dividend into after-tax profit. In the United States, it is more common to refer to a payout ratio.
