discontinued operations investment & finance definition

A company’s operations that have been sold or shut down because they are no longer profitable or strategically beneficial. Often a company takes a charge against its quarterly earnings to account for the expense involved in discontinuing the operation. Both income and expenses from discontinued operations must be reported separately on a company’s income statement in order to give investors a clear picture about the company’s ongoing operations.
