The University of Michigan’s consumer
sentiment index that is closely watched by those who follow the economy and the
financial markets. Typically traders react not so much to what the index says,
but rather to how closely the results matched analysts’ expectations. The
present situation index measures consumers’ current attitudes about the economy
and their finances.
